William R Webb (British 1858-1928): 'Low Tide Whitby', watercolour signed and dated 1901, titled verso on exhibition label 28cm x 22cm Notes: Webb was a lace designer in Nottingham. After serving his apprenticeship with the lace designer Mr Elsey, he was employed by John Bromley and Sons of Philadelphia, USA from 1892 to 1895. On his return to England he established his own business as a lace designer in Nottingham, working first in Bridlesmith Gate and then at 11 Heathcoat Street. He was closely associated with the Castle Gate Congregational Church where he served as a deacon and was secretary of the Sunday School. He was also a watercolour artist and some of his paintings were exhibited in Nottingham and Derby.
