Lot Number : 113

  • Thomas Fawcett Hutton (British 1867-1886): St Mary's Steps Scarborough, oil on canvas signed and dated '86, 39cm x 29cm Notes: Hutton studied at Scarborough School of Art in its very early years, under Albert Strange. His father, James Hutton, was a greengrocer with a shop on St Thomas Street, and was also Mayor of Scarborough from 1888-1889 and 1889-1890. His brother, James Alfred, was a GP and Director of the Scarborough Spa Company who became a wealthy man until his death on Christmas Day 1930. This rare picture was painted in the last year of Hutton's life, when he sadly died of heart disease at only 19 years of age. His father died of the same condition in 1893 so it seems the condition was congenital. A similar painting taken from the opposite direction hangs in Scarborough Art Gallery.
