Our eagerly-awaited Spring Art sale is here. This auction catalogue includes a fine selection of artworks from artists past & present - a sale of selected pictures from local, national & international estates and private vendors.

Featuring:
An important single-owner collection of watercolours & drawings by the Weatherill family, some of which have never been on the market before.

Twelve previously unseen lots by Frank Henry Mason, by direct descent through the family.

Over thirty works by members of the Staithes Group, including a rare painting by Percy Morton Teasdale.

Frank Henry Mason (Staithes Group 1875-1965): 'The Way We Spent My Birthday' - Kermis Time Volendam 1st October 1899, oil on panel signed with initials inscribed and dated, further title and inscription 'Phil May Frank Mason & Tom Brown' verso 18cm x 25cm Provenance: from the estate of Christine Dexter and by descent from the artist's sister Eleanor Marie (Nellie) In 1898 & 1899 Mason spent quite sometime in Holland at the artist's colony in Volendam centred on the Hotel Spaander, an artist friendly atelier run by Leendert Spaander. Here Mason circulated with an international group of artists including the caricaturist Phil May and illustrator Tom Brown (both illustrated). In March 1899 he took he took his new bride Edith for their honeymoon visiting Rotterdam, Katwijk then on to Volendam in June extending to his birthday on the 1st October coinciding with the boisterous festival of Kermis . J H (Early 20th century): 'SS Cameronia' & 'SS Caledonia' - Steam Ship Portraits, pair oils on board, signed with initials titled and dated 1913 verso 14cm x 23cm (2) Notes: The CAMERONIA was a Passenger/Cargo Vessel of 10,963 tons built in 1911 by D & W Henderson Ltd Glasgow, Yard No 472 for the Anchor Line, Glasgow. Her Maiden voyage was from Glasgow to Moville and New York on 13th September 1911. She acted as troopship from 1917. On the 15th April 1917 she was torpedoed and sank in 40 minutes when about 150 miles E of Malta. Around 200 lives lost out of approximately 2,700. The CALEDONIA also built by D. & W. Henderson & Co. Ltd., Glasgow in 1904 and owned at the time of her loss by Anchor Line (Henderson Bros.). Requisitioned by the British Government upon the outbreak of war in 1914, met her fate in the Mediterranean on December 5th, 1916. When 125 miles E. of Malta she encountered the German submarine U-65, which torpedoed her without warning. The captain, Capt. James Blaikie, attempted to sink the submarine by ramming and actually succeeded in striking her. Capt. Blaikie was taken prisoner by the Germans
