Lot Number : 1

  • Paul Paul (Staithes Group 1865-1937): Self Portrait, oil on canvas signed 60cm x 50cm
Provenance: from the artist's studio collection. Paul Politachi, born in Constantinople in 1865, was the son of Constantine Politachi (1840-1914), a merchant in cotton goods, and his wife Virginie. About 1870 the family came to England, and in 1871 Paul is listed as living at 4 Victoria Crescent, Broughton, Salford with his parents, two younger sisters Eutcripi and Emilie, paternal grandmother Fotine, a governess and a servant. In January 1887 he enrolled at Hubert von Herkomer's School at Bushey, where he presumably met fellow future Staithes Group members Rowland Henry Hill and Percy Morton Teasdale.

After his marriage to Marion Archer in 1896 he changed his name to the more Anglophone Paul Plato Paul. He exhibited at the Royal Academy ten times between 1901 and 1932. He was elected to the Royal Society of British Artists in 1903 and in that year exhibited 'The Old Pier, Walberswick' and 'The Road to the Village' in their winter exhibition. Two years later he was elected a member of the Staithes Art Club, alongside Teasdale. He died at 11 Bath Road, Bedford Park, Brentford, Middlesex on 23 January 1937, aged 71.
