He was awarded the Order of the Medjidie, 3rd Class, and in 1911 the Coronation Medal. From September 1910 to September 1913, he was an Adjutant of the Territorial Force, and in April 1914, was appointed Adjutant of the 1st Battalion of his own regiment. Captain Stephen served in the European War, and was killed in action on the 31st of October 1914, just 12 years to the day after his DSO was gazetted. Younger brother of Douglas Clinton Leslie Stephen (see following lot).
