This late 18th-century 8-day oak and mahogany longcase clock by William Watson of Blackburn (Lancs) is a stunning piece of horological craftsmanship. The clock features a flat top and open fretwork, a deep cornice with dogtooth moulding, and a frieze beneath. The square hood door is flanked by reeded pilasters with brass capitals, while the trunk boasts reeded quarter columns and a long door with concave corners on a plinth with canted corners on bracket feet.
The brass dial is adorned with cast brass spandrels, a broad silvered chapter ring with Roman numerals and five-minute Arabics, a profusely engraved and silvered dial centre with a seconds dial, matching steel hands, and a calendar aperture. The clock houses an hourly rack striking movement with a recoil anchor escapement, and comes complete with weights, pendulum, and key.
William Watson of Northgate, Blackburn, who worked from circa 1770 to 1814, frequently signed some of his clocks without a placename, similar to this exquisite timepiece. Don't miss the opportunity to own this exceptional longcase clock at the upcoming auction by Duggleby Auctioneers.
