Dating back to the 12th to 13th century, this remarkable Persian Kashan fritware or stonepaste pottery storage jar or vase boasts an ovoid form. The piece is adorned with dark indigo decorations under a lustrous turquoise glaze, featuring a captivating series of horizontal lines and repeated looped shapes on the body. Standing on an everted footed base, this elegant vase measures H39cm.
The provenance of this exquisite piece adds to its allure. Legend has it that the vase was discovered in the late 19th century in Egypt by the distinguished English diplomat, colonial administrator, antiquarian collector, and excavation patron, Lord William Amherst (1835-1909). Lord Amherst, known for his association with the renowned archaeologist Howard Carter, who famously uncovered Tutankhamun's tomb, passed the Kashan vase down through his family line. The vase eventually made its way to the current vendor through direct descent from Amherst's daughter, Geraldine.
