Provenance: an original commission for The Tatler magazine, stamped and numbered 1660 verso. Gilbert Holiday was an official war artist in the First World War, then later established himself as a prominent equestrian artist, and at one point shared a studio with Lionel Edwards. He worked as an illustrator for publications such as The Graphic, The Tatler, and the Illustrated London News, and competed in the art competition at the 1932 Summer Olympics.
