Discover a stunning piece of British horology with this early 18th-century 8-day oak longcase clock by John Watts of Canterbury. This exquisite timepiece features a flat-topped hood with a broad cornice, dentil moulding, and blind fret beneath. The hood is adorned with baluster turned pilasters with wooden capitals, flanking the square hood door.
The trunk of the clock showcases a recessed beaded edge and a long ogee-topped door with crossbanding, while the plinth boasts applied skirting. The dial also includes a silvered chapter ring with Roman numerals, five-minute Arabics, minute, and quarter-hour tracks. The clock's five-pillar movement is equipped with a recoil anchor escapement and inside countwheel strike, beautifully sounding the hours on a bell. This exceptional timepiece comes complete with weights and a pendulum.
John Watts, a skilled clockmaker, was apprenticed in 1668 to Thomas Feilder in London. He later established his workshop in Canterbury in 1721, where he continued crafting exquisite timepieces until his passing in 1775.
