Presented by Duggleby Auctioneers, this mid-19th century Scottish mahogany longcase clock by Robert Miller of Perth showcases exquisite craftsmanship and unique features typical of Scottish clockmaking. The clock, dating back to around 1850, boasts a swan-necked pediment and a break-arch hood door framed by ring-turned pilasters with brass capitals.
The trunk of the clock is adorned with full-length recessed barley twist columns and a shaped door with a recessed panel, all resting on a decorative plinth. The dial is intricately painted with depictions of fruit on the spandrels and an image of a gardener on the arch, complemented by Roman numerals, subsidiary seconds, and date dials. The maker's name and original stamped brass hands further enhance its authenticity.
This timepiece houses a two-train weight-driven movement with rack striking and a recoil anchor escapement, striking the hours on a bell. Complete with its pendulum and weights, the clock features a unique pendulum bob painted with a charming country cottage scene, a characteristic only found in 19th-century Scottish longcase clocks.
Robert Miller, whose workshop was located in New Row, Perth, in 1841, has left a legacy of exceptional craftsmanship in this stunning longcase clock, making it a rare and valuable addition to any collection of antique timepieces.
