We’re pleased to present our Winter Art Sale, a curated collection of paintings and works on paper from the 18th to 21st centuries – rich in marine subjects, Yorkshire coastal views, portraiture, still life and modern British art.
Anchoring the marine and coastal strand are international names such as Bruno Gherri-Moro, Jef Dutilleux, Gustave Madelain, and William Callow RWS, alongside British favourites Colin Verity, Michael J. Whitehand, James Miller, and William Edward Webb. Yorkshire and the North East are strongly represented with Whitby and Scarborough views by George & Richard Weatherill, Frank Watson Wood, Arthur Wilde Parsons, and more.
We are proud to feature a substantial number of works from the Staithes Group, including Ernest Dade, Frank Henry Mason, Henry Silkstone Hopwood, Albert George Stevens (notably A Whitby Jet Worker), James William Booth, Ernest Higgins Rigg, Owen Bowen, Rowland Henry Hill, Robert Jobling, and Ralph Hedley—spanning harbour life, fisherfolk, and moorland scenes.
Portraits and genre are led by George Spencer Watson, a commanding pair by Noel Denholm Davis, and works by John Robert Dicksee and George Smith; animal and sporting pictures include Edgar Hunt, John Emms, George Armfield, and hunting scenes by Robert Leslie Howey and Sam Marriott. Still life highlights range from a Flemish school work after Gaspar Peeter Verbruggen the Younger to pieces by Emily Beatrice Bland and Catherine Tyler.
Modern and contemporary entries add breadth: Frances Hodgkins (Woman and Child Sewing), Dame Ethel Walker, Rowland Hilder, Kurt Jackson, Damien Hirst (spin painting), Henry Moore (colour lithograph), Victor Pasmore (attrib.), Steven Scholes, John Hanley (“Nearly a Lowry” series), and Bruce Kendall. Many lots carry appealing provenance and exhibition labels (including Christie’s and The Heaton Cooper Studio).
From luminous watercolours to statement oils and select prints, the sale offers quality and variety at a range of estimates—ideal for established collectors and new buyers alike.
