Modern Living & Design

26 September 2025 11:00
Venue: Online & at Duggleby Stephenson, York, YO19 5GF

Our first Modern Living & Design auction brings together an exciting blend of 20th century and contemporary furniture, design, and fine art – a celebration of form, function and creativity across eras and disciplines.

Highlights include Scandinavian and Italian design classics, from Carlo Scarpa’s striking 1970s Samson dining table and Kazuhide Takahama’s sculptural ‘Kazuki’ chairs, to elegant Danish seating by Stouby and safari chairs attributed to Kaare Klint. Mid-century icons feature strongly, with Charles and Ray Eames represented by both the playful Hang It All coat rack and the timeless rosewood lounge chair and ottoman for Herman Miller. Ercol designs appear throughout, from early elm and beech Windsor suites to the much-admired Giraffe bookcases.

Alongside furniture and design, the sale showcases an engaging selection of fine art and works on paper. Collectors will discover pieces by major names including David Hockney, Jack Pender and Derek Hyatt, as well as avant-garde lithographs by Lajos Kassák and playful contemporary works by Judith Mellor and Mark Hearld. Scandinavian glass art is well represented with Oiva Toikka’s celebrated Birds by Toikka series for Iittala.

Luxury accessories also make their mark, led by a Chanel red lambskin Trendy CC mini bag and a Prada Aimee shoulder bag. For those seeking British craftsmanship, a fine group of Mouseman oak furniture demonstrates the enduring appeal of Robert Thompson’s Yorkshire workshop.

With its curated mix of international design, modernist furniture, contemporary art and stylish living, this first edition of Modern Living & Design offers a distinctive opportunity to acquire pieces that embody both beauty and practicality for the modern home.
