The Country House Sale

26/03/2022

David Duggleby Auctioneers latest Country House Auction offers an impressive selection of antiques, from silver and glass, to English, Continental, and Oriental ceramics, alongside taxidermy, lighting, clocks, and rugs, and an array of furniture including Yorkshire Oak.

The sale opens with a fine selection of English silver, including Georgian and later candlesticks, Edwardian dish rings, and Georgian and later flatware.

The sale also features an impressive single owner collection of portrait miniatures, featuring examples by leading artists such as George Engleheart, Henry Bone and Christian Richter.

The ceramics section includes desirable names like Bristol, Worcester, and Caughley, as well as a good selection of Royal Worcester including hand painted examples by Harry Stinton and Harry Davis amongst others, and a rare reticulated double walled vase by George Owen.

An interesting array of boxes is also on offer, from a 19th century travelling apothecary cabinet to quality decanter boxes, tea caddies, writings slopes and more; shortly followed by a good range of Arts & Crafts pieces including a number of decorative brass and copper chargers by the Newlyn, Glasgow and Kewsick schools.

Over fifty lots of mostly theological books from the library of a friary precede the furniture section, ranging from 16th century velum bound examples to good leather bound sets from the 19th century.

The second half of the Country House Sale begins with a clock section which features a fine early 19th century Scottish ‘Drum-Head’ longcase clock (lot 1264), along with a selection of other longcase clocks, mantel clocks and barometers.

The furniture catalogue kicks off with two fine pieces from prominent maker “Gillows of Lancaster”: a George III mahogany chamber writing table (lot 1269), and a 19th century birdseye maple davenport (lot 1270).

From there, the sale moves into a good selection of decorative occasional pieces including inlaid tables, upholstered chairs, worktables, bijouterie cabinets and mirrors. A feature from this section would be the pair of 19th century French walnut Fauteuil open armchairs (lot 1271)

The sale also includes larger furnishings such as desks, chests, bookcases and linen presses. A piece of particular interest is a Georgian figured mahogany miniature bureau on stand with a well fitted interior (lot 1317).

Towards the end of the sale, there are two pieces from renowned Country Houses: a 19th century chaise longue from Sledmere House in Yorkshire (lot 1333), and a Victorian pine chest from the servant’s quarters of Chatsworth House in Derbyshire (lot 1334).

Then, the sale moves into an Arts and Crafts section featuring a William Birch rocking chair (lot 1345) and an oak dresser attributed to Leonard Francis Wyburd (lot 1347), both for prestigious retailer Liberty & Co. London.

The sale comes to an end with an exciting collection of early Thomas Whittaker furniture which was made before he adopted the ‘Gnomeman’ trademark. The rare collection comes to us directly from family decent and is fresh to the market (lots 1348-1352). This section also features various Yorkshire critters including: Mouseman, Rabbitman, Squirrelman and Acornman.

The sale closes with a twenty-five lot section of mostly Persian rugs and carpets, the main highlight from this section is the large Persian Heriz carpet which is just under eight meters long (lot 1369).
