Discover a fascinating group of four Byzantine terracotta oil lamps at Duggleby Auctioneers. Originating from the Eastern Mediterranean and dating back to the 5th–7th century A.D., this unique collection includes a variety of mould-made slipper-form oil lamps.
Each lamp features a rounded body, a large central filling hole, and a short to elongated nozzle. One lamp stands out with exquisite radiating linear decoration, while another bears ancient remnants of oil and wick residue within its burnished interior.
Additionally, the group boasts a Crusader-period terracotta oil lamp from the 12th-13th century A.D. This lamp showcases an angular form adorned with recessed panel decoration and a pierced handle moulded in the likeness of a stylised animal head.
With a provenance linked to the Dead Sea area of the Holy Lands in the 1960s, this collection offers a rare glimpse into ancient lighting practices and artistry. Don't miss the opportunity to own these remarkable pieces of history at our upcoming auction.
