David C Bell (British 1950-) presents a captivating watercolour titled 'True Briton off Wapping c1867'. The piece, measuring 38cm x 63cm, is signed by the artist and bears the title on the reverse.
The subject of the painting, the True Briton, holds historical significance. Constructed in 1861 by R Wigram & Sons at the renowned Blackwall Yard on the Thames, this wood-built passenger ship was the third vessel to bear the name. With a weight of 1046 tonnes and a length of 195 feet, the True Briton represented the culmination of the iconic 'Blackwall' or 'frigate-built' ship design. These ships were renowned for their association with the Honourable East India Company, and the Wigram and Greene Yards at Blackwall were prolific in their construction.
In this artwork, the True Briton is depicted departing from Wapping on a voyage to Australia. Throughout its seafaring life, the vessel passed through various hands until it was ultimately owned by John Smith of London. Its final role as a coal-hulk marked the end of its maritime career.
