Discover a fascinating photographic archive by Charles Thomas (1883-1981) capturing a walk along the Pilgrims Route from St Jean Pied de Port in France to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. Undertaken over three years - 1913, 1919, and 1920 - the collection includes photographs, diaries, letters, Eastman and Kodak negative albums, numerous glass stereoscopic slides, and a sketch map of the route.
Charles Thomas embarked on these journeys with his brother Henry, who later became Sir Henry, Principal Librarian of the British Museum. An artist and teacher with a keen interest in photography, Charles delved into stereoscopic photography in the late 1920s, capturing British wild flora in vivid colour. The astonishing result of his work comprises around 500 slides now housed at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew.
This remarkable archive provides a unique glimpse into the pilgrimage experience through the lens of a talented artist and photographer. Don't miss the opportunity to bid on this exceptional collection at the upcoming auction at Duggleby Auctioneers.
