Our Maps, Antiquarian Books & Ephemera sale presents a distinguished selection of early maps, rare books and notable printed works spanning the 17th to 19th centuries, featuring celebrated cartographers, influential historians, leading satirists and significant documentary photography.

Highlights include two fine first-edition, first-strike maps of the Yorkshire Ridings by John Speed, uncoloured and richly detailed with armorials and inset plans of York, Hull and Richmond. Alongside them sits Thomas Jeffreys’ complete 1771 folio atlas ‘Maps of the County of York’, comprising twenty double-page engraved sheets by the King’s Geographer.

A complete first edition of William Camden’s ‘Britannia’ (1695), illustrated with fifty maps and engraved plates, offers an important early scholarly survey of Britain. The section of political satire is led by two vivid hand-coloured etchings by James Gillray, sharply lampooning French ambitions and Napoleon at the height of British–French tensions.

Among the rare books is a first edition, first issue of the 1611 King James ‘He’ Bible, a milestone of English printing, along with Thomas Annan’s evocative 1900 photogravure folio ‘Old Closes and Streets of Glasgow’, limited to 100 copies and documenting the city’s historic tenements.

Completing the offering is the 1800 volume ‘Washington’s Letters’, containing facsimiles of President George Washington’s correspondence to Sir John Sinclair, with provenance linking it to Sir William Strickland and early American numismatic history.

Explore the catalogue and place your bids today for the chance to take home something especially unique and historically significant.
