Explore a catalogue of cultured elegance in The Grand Tour, a special interiors-led auction inspired by the journeys of the 18th and early 19th century, when Europe’s most fashionable travellers embarked on the celebrated Grand Tour – an education in art, antiquity, architecture and taste. Reflecting the elegance and intrigue of this era, the sale celebrates the refined eye of the collector, bringing together classical motifs, continental glamour and timeworn splendour.
Highlights include Walter Winans’ rare bronze The Centauress (1915), a striking mythological subject, alongside a superb French 19th century gilt-metal and pietra dura-mounted casket and an evocative pair of 18th century oils in the circle of Pompeo Batoni, depicting dramatic scenes from Virgil’s Aeneid. Also featured is a South Italian Gnathian oinochoe, richly decorated with theatrical and Dionysiac motifs, and a captivating William Etty RA oil sketch, The Bathing Nymph, with notable provenance.
Further treasures include Emmanuele Villanis’ monumental Art Nouveau bust La Sibylle, an important pair of 19th century bronze muses Calliope and Melpomene, and an exceptional 1690 first edition of Suetonius inscribed by Sir William and Lady Emma Hamilton. Also included is a beautifully preserved silver denarius of Augustus, offering a tangible link to the ancient world and the spirit of Grand Tour collecting.
