LotNo 106

Frances Mary Hodgkins (New Zealand 1869-1947): 'Woman and Child Sewing', watercolour c.1908 unsigned 42cm x 30cm Notes: Hodgkins produced a number of watercolours of a similar theme, partly because women often combined sitting outside their houses with some kind of handiwork or preparation of food, and it was easier to persuade them to be painted than if they were inside their homes. These works divide into sub-groups: women with or without head coverings, whether they face or look away from the artist, the handling of light and shadow, colour ranges, etc. There is a freedom to the present work that places it c.1908, not least because of the individuality of the faces compared to her earlier work. The artist visited Holland twice in 1907 and 1908, where the present work was produced. This painting is included in The Complete Frances Hodgkins Collection, produced by Mary Kisler and Auckland Art Gallery, no. FH1329. We are grateful to Mary Kisler for her assistance in cataloguing this lot.
