Description: Kees van Dongen (Dutch/French 1877-1968): 'Paysage au Remorqueur' (Landscape with Tugboat), watercolour gouache and black crayon c.1905 signed 8cm x 14cm
Provenance: Christie's Paris, 'Art Impressionniste et Moderne', 24th May 2006 Lot 57; then with Wolseley Fine Arts, Walterstone. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from the Wildenstein Institute, Paris, ref 06.03.21.9828.1237 dated 21st March 2006, stating their intention to include the present lot in a forthcoming catalogue raisonné.
Notes: van Dongen was a central member of the Fauvist movement alongside artists such as Henri Matisse, André Derain and Maurice de Vlaminck. This work exhibits the more muted style and smaller scale of the landscapes, inspired by Rembrandt, which formed his earlier output. In 1926, Van Dongen was awarded the Legion d’Honneur, and in the following year the Order of the Crown of Belgium. His works are currently held in the collections of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., among others.
