Notes: Mason joined the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve at the onset of the Great War, rising to command a flotilla of Motor Launches. His postings included the East Coast of Britain but also the Suez Canal area. He visited Malta for the first time on his return journey from Egypt to England in the summer of 1916. After serving as a Dazzle Officer during 1918, he was then appointed as a War Artist at the end of the War and returned to Malta to prepare a large body of work now in the Imperial War Museum.
