Frank Henry Mason (Staithes Group 1875-1965) presents 'Sliema Creek - Malta' in this exquisite watercolour piece, signed, titled, and dated 1918. Measuring 22cm x 49cm, this artwork showcases Mason's remarkable talent. The reverse features an exhibition label with the title.
A notable figure, Mason's involvement in the Great War is reflected in his work. Serving in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, he commanded a flotilla of Motor Launches and was stationed in various locations, including the East Coast of Britain and the Suez Canal area. His first visit to Malta was in 1916, on his return journey from Egypt to England.
Following his service as a Dazzle Officer in 1918, Mason was appointed as a War Artist. He created a significant body of work, now housed in the Imperial War Museum, during his time in Malta at the end of the War. This watercolour, dated 1918, is part of a small collection painted by Mason in 1918 and 1919, outside of his IWM commission.
