Andrew Charles Colley (1859-1910)

Little is known about the artist Andrew Colley, and his work very rarely appears at auction. He was born in Newcastle, the son of a local twine merchant. He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1893 and 1909, exhibiting initially from 7 Chester Crescent, Newcastle, before moving to London sometime between 1899 and 1905. It seems he visited Runswick Bay with his wife in 1891, lodging at Pansy House. He was never elected a member of the Staithes Art Club, but nonetheless is generally considered a member of the Staithes Group, similar to other Staithes Group artists such as William Gilbert Foster and John William Howey.
