Moorcroft pottery is highly sought after by collectors worldwide, with early pieces and limited-edition collections being particularly prized. The value of Moorcroft ceramics is determined by several factors, including rarity, condition, and the significance of the design. Collectors appreciate Moorcroft for its historical significance, artistic merit, and as an investment.

In the realm of art pottery, Moorcroft emerges as a beacon of unparalleled artistry and design, captivating collectors and enthusiasts alike. Founded in 1897 by William Moorcroft in Stoke-on-Trent, the heart of the British ceramics industry, Moorcroft quickly gained recognition for its artistic pottery, leading to royal patronage and international acclaim.

Moorcroft's journey began when William Moorcroft became a designer for James Macintyre & Company. His early work featured the Florian Ware, characterised by its innovative slip-trailing technique where liquid clay was applied to create designs. This technique became a hallmark of Moorcroft pottery, distinguishing its pieces with a depth and texture that set them apart from other ceramics of the time. William's talent and vision led him to establish his own pottery studio, where he continued to refine his craft and develop the distinctive Moorcroft style.

Over the years, Moorcroft has maintained its commitment to high-quality, handcrafted pottery. Each piece goes through a meticulous process, from design to the final glaze, ensuring that the artistry of its creators is reflected in every detail. The company's dedication to traditional methods, combined with innovative designs, has ensured its continued popularity and success.

Here at David Duggleby we take immense pride in offering pieces from various epochs of Moorcroft's storied history, each encapsulating the brand's unwavering dedication to craftsmanship. The meticulous process, from the initial design sketches to the final glaze, ensures that every piece of Moorcroft pottery is a masterpiece of art. Pieces from the mesmerizing Whitby collection are especially exciting to see due to the local significance of the subject. That’s why when we received a beautifully crafted vase depicting the seaside town, we wanted to explore the collection a little more.

The Whitby series stands out for its evocative representation of the seaside town of Whitby, located not far from our Scarborough salerooms on the Yorkshire coast. This collection captures the essence of Whitby, renowned for its historic abbey, picturesque harbour, and sweeping beaches.

The designs often feature vibrant blues and greens, reflecting the colours of the sea and landscape. Detailed imagery, such as the famous Whitby Abbey, fishing boats, and the rolling waves of the North Sea, are intricately rendered, showcasing the skill of Moorcroft's artists. These pieces not only celebrate the scenic charm of Whitby but also embody the craftsmanship and artistic excellence that Moorcroft is known for.

The piece in question is titled simply ‘Whitby’, a creation by designer Kerry Goodwin and one of only 50 pieces made. The vase is a masterpiece of design and storytelling, encapsulating the quintessential charm of Whitby with stylized depictions of cottages, fishing boats, and the famed 199 steps leading to the abbey, all adding up to the old Whitby of today. Moorcroft themselves said of the design:

‘If atmosphere can ever transform into an image to match, then in Whitby, Kerry will have succeeded.’

Kerry Goodwin's ability to capture the atmospheric essence of Whitby, transforming it into a visual narrative that resonates with both locals and collectors alike, makes this piece a truly special item to call your own.

The vase is one of several Moorcroft pieces to feature in this week’s Decorative Antiques and Collectors auction. Browse the catalogue to find out more.Top of Form
