Description: Attrib. Francesco Tironi (c1745-1797): The Entrance to the Cannareggio with San Geremia Venice, oil on canvas unsigned 51cm x 66cm

Provenance: the painting which was the property of Gideon Smales, and referred to as the 'Canaletto' in two inventories of 1934, has remained in the Smales family and with their descendants (ship builders of Whitby and owners of Carr Mount Sleights) for about 150 years. The painting has been relined in the 19th century and until the sale of the Carr Mount in 2008 had laid in the attic for the previous 95 years. Since then it has had a light clean to remove the discoloured varnish and some overpaint
