On his return, he studied architecture at Sheffield University and later ran his own successful practice, being a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects. However, painting had always been his self-confessed 'first love', and in the 1970s he gave up architecture to become a full-time artist, having his first one-man exhibition in 1979.
