Frederick Schultz Smith (Hull 1860-1925): 'Old North Bridge Hull', monochrome watercolour and ink signed and dated '97, titled in a later hand verso 8.5cm x 12cm; Hull Views, three circular watercolours, two signed, max dia. 15.5cm (unframed) (4)
Notes: Born in Worthing, Sussex in 1860, F S Smith came to Hull as a small child and lived most of his life in the old St. John's Wood area in west Hull; he was still drawing in his sixties shortly before his death in 1925. Much like his near contemporary and fellow Yorkshire artist Albert Thomas Pile (1882-1981), his drawings are visual 'snapshots' in time, often produced to record buildings that were due to be demolished. Smith was commissioned to produce around three hundred drawings for C E Fewster, a paint maker in Hull who collected historical records. Some were also used as illustrations in books and newspapers, such as the Eastern Morning News, whilst others were sold to the owners of premises which he had drawn.
