Description: French - 19th century Belgium slate and marble 8-day mantle clock c1860, surmounted with a cast brass figure of the French poet Ernest Legouve, holding a copy of his collection of poems "Les Merite Des Femmes", with a Parisian clock movement in a drum case, white enamel dial, roman numerals and steel moon hands, twin train striking movement sounding the hours and half hours on a bell. With pendulum & Key.
Clocks of this description were very popular in France during the mid 19th century, predominantly depicting and promoting the life and work of French classical writers, scholars and poets.
