Lot Number : 189

  • Edward Hardy 'Ted' Harrison (Canadian 1926-2015): Three Fish, oil on board signed and dated '66, 31cm x 61cm
Provenance: gifted to the vendor as a child in the 1960s by the artist. Harrison was a close friend of the vendor's father when the pair lived in County Durham, known by the family as 'Uncle Ted'.

Born in a small colliery community in Wingate, County Durham, in 1923, Harrison studied at the Hartlepool School of Art and after the war was awarded a National Diploma at Durham University. He spent time abroad studying various artistic cultures; the present pictures are from his time spent in New Zealand, prior to him leaving for Canada and the Yukon where he enjoyed great success and was most successful. The vendor recalls the day in his parents’ Hartlepool home when 'Uncle Ted' came to bid his farewells; he drew the vendor a self-portrait in his autograph book of him standing under a toadstool, joking that he was ‘a small man’ - which he was!
