Provenance: private collection purchased Christies 26th May 2004 Lot 603; with Colin Denny Ltd. Specialists in marine works of Art, Chelsea Green, London; probably painted to celebrate the end of the Jane's whaling career and the survival of both vessels from the severe conditions of the 1836 season where the 'Middleton' was wrecked, the 'Jane' was known as a Bethel ship having frequent religious services on board conducted the mate/preacher Stephen Wilson.
