James Neal (Northern British 1918-2011): 'Houses in Victoria Avenue Hull', these are the houses opposite where the artist lived at number 205, oil on board signed, 20cm x 24cm
Provenance: East Yorkshire private collection purchased from the artist; exh. Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 1965, No.764. Neal was accepted at St Martin's School of Art in 1932, aged 14. In 1958 he moved to Hull as Lecturer in Painting and Drawing at Hull Regional College of Art, then becoming Senior Lecturer in the History of Art. Over the next fifty years he became well known for painting scenes around the Hull area. Ferens Art Gallery, has twice mounted major retrospective exhibitions of James Neal's work
