Further Information & Condition Report

Presented by Duggleby Auctioneers, this lot features a pair of early 17th-century engraved maps by British cartographer John Speed (1552–1629). The maps, titled 'The North and East Ridings of Yorkshire' and 'The West Ridinge of Yorkshyre', are first editions and first strikes. They are both in their original uncoloured condition, showcasing numerous armorials, decorative cartouches, and embellishments characteristic of Speed's work.

The 'North and East Ridings of Yorkshire' map includes inset plans of Richmond and Hull, while the 'West Ridinge of Yorkshyre' map features an inset plan of Yorke. Originally published in 1611 and 1616 respectively, these maps are particularly rare as they still retain their original Latin text on the verso. Each map measures 40cm x 53cm, offering a fascinating glimpse into the historical geography of Yorkshire during the early 17th century.
