Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson carved and adzed oak fender, commissioned by solicitor George Bolton in 1927. Its concave front rail is carved with opposing heads of a fool and a crowned, bearded wise man, with two mouse signatures illustrating the proverb “From the mouths of fools to the ears of wise men”. The block ends are carved with the monogram GB and the date 1927.
Made in December 1927 and delivered in January 1928, the fender is recorded in Robert Thompson’s Craftsmen as supplied that month for five guineas, verbally confirmed. It descended through the Bolton family to the present vendor. Bolton, of Byland House, Moorhead Lane, Shipley, was Thompson’s solicitor and received Thompson’s original ‘patent mouse’, made in connection with registration of the Mouseman trademark in 1931 and later returned to the Thompson family.
Discussed in Diane Sinnott and Harriet Hunter Smart, *Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson 1876–1955: Arts & Crafts Furniture Maker & Designer* (Tennants exhibition catalogue, 2016), p. 11. This distinctive 1920s Mouseman fender is offered for sale at auction by Duggleby Auctioneers.
