Robert Thompson Mouseman oak double ashtray, dated 1927 and carved with the signature mouse, commissioned by solicitor George Bolton of Byland House, Shipley. Supplied in January 1928 as part of the same delivery as the accompanying fender and armchairs, according to verbal confirmation from Robert Thompson’s Craftsmen.
The ashtray predates the registration of Thompson’s mouse trademark in 1931 and belongs to an early commission for Bolton. Diane Sinnott and Harriet Hunter Smart discuss Bolton’s connection with Thompson in *Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson 1876–1955: Arts & Crafts Furniture Maker & Designer* (Tennants exhibition catalogue, 2016, p. 11), identifying him as Thompson’s solicitor and recipient of the original ‘patent mouse’. Provenance: George Bolton, then by family descent to the present vendor. Offered for sale at auction with Duggleby Auctioneers.
