Mrs Richard Hardey (Hannah Maria Hudson) (Hull 1815-1865): George Earle (1782-1863) and Mary Foster - Half Length Portraits, pair oval oils on canvas, the latter signed and dated 1854 verso 74cm x 62cm (2) Notes: Hannah Maria Hudson, daughter of Wesleyan Minister Revd. Benjamin Brook Hudson and his wife Hannah, was born in Dumfries in 1815, but soon moved to Barrow upon Humber where her father was a minister. She married Mr Richard Hardey (1816-1889) on 23rd April 1840 and the couple moved to Hull. Hannah worked as a talented, if relatively unknown, portrait painter, working under the name of 'Mrs Richard Hardey'. Sadly, Hannah developed breast cancer and died in January 1865, while Richard went on to work as a successful portrait photographer. George Earle Jnr was the son of George Earle Snr (1748-1827), who migrated to Hull c.1777 and established himself as a stonemason, architect and speculative builder, and Mary Hargrave, daughter of stone mason and carver-gilder, Jeremiah Hargrave. George Jnr. married Mary Foster at St Mary's Church, Sculcoates on 19th February 1811, and, alongside his brother Thomas, established a business as Hull merchants who were, for a time, the town's leading importers of slate, stone, and Italian marble. In the 1851 census, he is listed as a 'Merchant, Ship Owner & Cement Manufacturer'. George Jnr's nephews Charles Foster Earle (1819-1870) and William Joel Earle (1824-1871) would go on to found C and W Earle (Earle's Shipbuilding) in 1845, having bought the Junction Foundry from James Livingston who built the first iron steam packet in 1831.

Early 1960s American Fender Precision electric bass guitar with original three-tone sunburst finish and faux tortoiseshell scratch plate; rosewood fretboard; all original fittings including chromium plated bridge and pick-up covers, finger rest, 'pots' and machines, dated on end of neck 5NOV62C, serial no.91625; L115cm overall; in Selmer simulated reptile skin covered carrying case. Sold with non-transferrable CITES A10 licence, certificate no.23GBA10CNKKEB, serial no.441200, dated 30th August 2023. Also included are original 1960s photographs of the band 'The Rascals' and photocopies of newspaper cuttings advertising their forthcoming performances along with a photocopy of a photograph of their television appearance on 'Opportunity Knocks' in 1967/8 (coming second to Mary Hopkins). In addition there is a reel-to-reel tape recording and USB stick of the band playing and two sheets of biographical information. Auctioneer's Note: The guitar was ordered by Trevor Parker from Pat Cornell's Music Shop, Spring Bank, Hull and imported from the USA in 1962, well before it was available in the UK. Trevor was the bass guitarist of The Rascals from Hull, later The Ides of March, who supported artists such as Elton John on the Hull circuit. Trevor played the guitar extensively until 1969 when The Rascals disbanded, he got married to Maureen and settled down to family life. Trevor sadly passed away in 2017, and after being in store for fifty-four years his widow has decided it is time for his guitar to be sold.

Denton & Fox of Hull – Early 19th century mahogany 8-day longcase clock c1802, pagoda pediment with an oval inlay and three ball and spire finials, break arch painted dial and hood door flanked by reeded pilasters with brass Corinthian capitals, long trunk door with conforming break arch top on a rectangular plinth raised on bracket feet, early Wilson (Birmingham) dial with Roman numerals, five minute Arabic’s and minute dots, subsidiary seconds dial and calendar aperture, with matching steel hands, floral spandrels within raised gesso work and a conforming oval depiction of a young maiden and dog to the break arch, dial pinned via a falseplate to a rack striking movement with a recoil anchor escapement striking the hours on a cast bell. With pendulum and weights. Joseph Denton was a respected and prolific Hull clock maker working in Scale Lane Hull 1779 and Silver Street 1782-1814. Entering a short-lived partnership with Charles Fox from Beverley in 1802.
