Much like his near contemporary and fellow Yorkshire artist Albert Thomas Pile (1882-1981), his drawings are visual 'snapshots' in time, often produced to record buildings that were due to be demolished. Smith was commissioned to produce around three hundred drawings for C E Fewster, a paint maker in Hull who collected historical records. Some were also used as illustrations in books and newspapers, such as the Eastern Morning News, whilst others were sold to the owners of premises which he had drawn.
