John Stonehouse of Leeds - mahogany 8-day longcase clock with a painted oval dial c1830, hood with a swans necked pediment and profuse contrasting inlay to both the hood and case, oval hood door with flanking pilasters and Corinthian capitals, conforming case with canted corners and short triple spire door, broad plinth with matching inlay and canted corners on shallow base, dial depicting masonic regalia, symbols, and pictorial depictions of the humanities, faith, hope, charity and righteousness, black chapter with white roman Arabic’s, date recorder and matching “crown” hands, dial pinned to a rack striking movement with a recoil anchor escapement, striking the hours on a coiled underslung gong. With weights and gridiron pendulum.
This clock case is of large, impressive dimensions and was almost certainly commissioned for a large masonic lodge in Leeds, a rare and unique example.
