Eugene Farcot - French "cherub on a swing" mantel clock c1870, with an alabaster case and drum movement supported by twin scroll supports on a stepped plinth raised on alabaster bun feet, enamel dial with Roman numerals, minute track and steel moon hands, 8-day count wheel striking movement, striking the hours and half-hours on a bell, mounted on an oval padded plinth with an ebonised base and conforming glass dome. Eugene Farcot was a highly respected 19th century Parisian clockmaker who in 1862 invented and patented the ingenious double action escapement with half-moon pallets and twin escape wheels used on this clock. The design of the escapement allows the pendulum to swing forwards and backwards as opposed to the conventional pendulum oscillating from left to right.
