Discover a remarkable piece of British craftsmanship with this c.1930s lightly adzed oak two-tier side table attributed to Mouseman - Graham Hayes, an apprentice at the workshop of Robert Thompson of Kilburn. This exquisite table features a rectangular tray top with rounded corners and a raised gallery, resting above an open lower shelf. Supported by four square-section legs with rounded outer corners, this table is united by elegant side stretchers.
Consigned by the nephew of Graham Hayes, this piece holds a poignant history. Hayes (1914-1943) began his career as an apprentice before joining the Small Scale Raiding Force (SSRF) during World War II, a special commando unit under the Special Operations Executive (SOE). Tragically, Hayes was captured by the Gestapo in 1942 and subsequently executed in 1943. His bravery and sacrifice have been immortalized in Guy Ritchie's film 'The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare', where he is portrayed as Graham 'Henry' Hayes.
