A German Arts and Crafts 'Gesamtkunstwerk' mantle clock c1890 in a square formed iron case with abalone incised triangles to each corner, case raised on four legs with inward facing feet, convex copper chapter ring hand engraved with upright Arabic numerals, conforming copper hands in an individual style, with an eight-day spring driven rack striking movement manufactured by Lenzkirch, striking the hours and half hours on a bell, conforming steel pendulum with a hand-crafted faceted pear-shaped copper bob. With key. Lenzkirch were one of the most prolific and respected German clock manufacturers of the 19th and early 20th century, it is highly probable that this movement was removed from another clock and incorporated into this artisan case when made at the end of the 19th century.

A Victorian rosewood mercury barometer with a swan’s neck pediment and brass finial, edge of the case profusely inlaid with mother of pearl inlay, 10” silvered dial with decorative engraving depicting a windmill and cottage to the centre, mercury syphon tube recording barometric air pressure from 28-31 inches with weather predictions, dial inscribed “Warranted” “ Hull” “Agostino Maspoli”, with a steel indicating hand and brass recording hand within a convex glass and cast brass bezel, circular hygrometer and boxed mercury thermometer indicating the temperature in degrees Fahrenheit, rectangular level bubble and recording hand setting disc. The Italian Maspoli family were prolific makers of barometers, mathematical, philosophical and optical instruments in 19th century Hull, working from 49 Salthouse Lane (1826-31), 79 Lowgate (1835-55) and Robinson Row (1839-1859) They are also recorded as watch and looking glass makers.

A mid-19th century 8-day oak and mahogany longcase clock retailed by John Stokes of Knutsford c 1840, with a swans neck pediment, three ball and eagle spun brass finials and brass paterae, square hood door flanked by ring turned pilasters, trunk with reeded quarter columns and capitals with a raised mahogany panel, short inlaid trunk door with a flat top and concave corners, plinth raised on decorative feet with canted corners and a conforming raised panel, fully painted dial with matching spandrels depicting country churches and yellow flowers on a gold lustre ground, broad Roman numerals, minute track, matching brass “crown” hands, subsidiary seconds dial and semi-circular date aperture with calendar disc behind, dial pinned via a Walker cast iron false plate to a weight driven rack striking movement, striking the hours on a bell. With pendulum, weights and key. Original casemakers label nailed to the rear of the case with the clockmakers name handwritten in ink. H216 W51 D23 John Stokes is recorded as working in Knutsford (Cheshire) 1834-48.
